Carer Support Furness
Carer Support Furness supports Unpaid Carers of all ages who live in the Furness area in the County of Cumbria. A key service they run is ‘Young Carer Support’. This is for a child or young person aged 5 – 18 years old who provides care to a family member who has a physical or mental illness, a disability or misuses drugs or alcohol, they are known as a Young Carer. The caring role and the care they provide can have a detrimental effect on their education, their health and wellbeing and their leisure and social opportunities.
Through Carer Support Furness’s services Young Carers are offered; age appropriate after-school groups, personal development and life skills, regular breaks from caring, Young Carer Assessment/Review/One-to-one and ongoing support, advocacy, networking and signposting to other support services and support through transition from being a Young Carer (under 18) to becoming classified as an Adult Carer (18+).
We have provided funding for a programme of activities and fun, to be offered to the young carers supported, across 50 weeks of the year.
This programme of after-school groups, fun activities and trips enables Young Carers to take a break from their caring role, improve their health and wellbeing, get support with building their confidence, learn new skills, have an opportunity to meet other Young Carers who are in a similar caring situation, develop friendships and find an avenue to speak confidentially about their concerns and worries to one of our staff members.
