Bath and North East Somerset Carers Centre supports more than 1,000 young carers aged 5–17 who help care for seriously ill or disabled family members. Many of these children take on responsibilities well beyond their years. These pressures can affect education, mental health, friendships, and childhood experiences.
This funding will help deliver a structured programme of respite and wellbeing services. Activities include regular craft and cooking sessions where young carers can relax, express themselves creatively, and learn new practical skills. Monthly peer support groups will provide safe social spaces where children can meet others with similar experiences and build friendships.
The project also includes young carers assessments and a dedicated support line to ensure families can access advice when needed, including practical guidance for financial support and application processes. Year 9 transition assessments will help older young carers prepare for the next stage of education and plan for future goals.
The need for dedicated support for young carers in BaNES is significant and growing. In the last two years, we have seen an increase in
engagement from carers living in areas of deprivation; they feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and unable to take breaks.
