Lancashire’s Opportunity Sports Foundation uses sport as a tool for development, engagement, and long-term positive change for young people facing multiple forms of disadvantage. This funded project, Sport Addict, is a long-standing programme supporting young people affected by substance misuse, dependency, and the wider challenges that accompany addiction.

Weekly multi-sport sessions provide an accessible and positive environment where young people can take part in physical activity while building confidence. Alongside sport, youth workers and trained peer mentors embed informal coaching and support, ensuring participants can access guidance without stigma or judgement.

The programme is trauma-informed and relationship-based. Many coaches and youth workers have lived experience or backgrounds similar to those they support, making them relatable role models and trusted figures. Peer volunteers who have progressed through the programme also model recovery and positive change, showing participants that different futures are possible.

We can evidence this project's sustained impact on behavioural change and improvements in young people’s health and wellbeing.
